Selinsgrove's plans to break its own record for the world's longest banana split have melted. Organizers cancelled the event, which was supposed to be held in May.

It was supposed to be one of the biggest events Selinsgrove had ever seen. A five-mile long ice cream treat in the middle of Market Street would break Selinsgrove's own record for the world's longest banana split, but the idea melted.

"It's too bad. I thought it was pretty cool that they were going to do it again. I saw it on facebook and I was going to plan on going," Lindsey Bognar said.

The people organizing the event in Selinsgrove say they could not get liability insurance because they are not a registered non-profit group.

The borough set the record for the world's longest banana split back in 1988, making a massive dessert that was four and a half miles long.

"I was looking forward to it because I missed it the last time," Robert Maurer said.

Linda Metzger was hoping to bring her grandchildren to the planned 25th anniversary event in May.

"I think anything that can bring a community together and draw people into a community is a great thing and I'm sorry to hear that it's cancelled," Linda Metzger said.

Event organizers say everyone who bought tickets or donated to the event will get their money back, but the people Newswatch 16 spoke with say it's not about the money.

"That's quite an honor I think for a small town to have a record like that for the longest banana split," Maurer said.

"It's a letdown, but maybe until next year something can be worked out," Janet Shirk said.

Organizers say holding the event next year is a possibility, but for now, Selinsgrove still holds the world record for the longest banana split.
