Man sentenced after deadly crash in Schuylkill County

Rodney Rivers, 46, of Youngstown, Ohio, has been sentenced after a crash in February left one dead.

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — A man has been sentenced after a crash in February left one dead in Schuylkill County.

In February, Rodney Rivers, 46, of Youngstown, Ohio, was traveling north at a high rate of speed on Sunbury Road in Cass Township while attempting to pass multiple vehicles.

Troopers say Rivers failed to negotiate a right-hand curve and hit another vehicle head-on. The driver of that vehicle, Elizabeth Ryan, 65, of Pottsville, died as a result. Two children, a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old, were also injured in the crash.

Rivers was charged in February with homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault by vehicle charges.

On Tuesday, Rivers was sentenced to 12 and a half to 38 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to five charges, including homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death or injury while not licensed, and related charges.
