BLOOMING GROVE TOWNSHIP -- As state police hunt down Eric Frein, the suspect named Tuesday in the shooting of two state troopers, we've learned new information about what took place Friday night at the state police barracks in Blooming Grove, including how troopers reacted to being ambushed in the dark of night without any warning.
When the call went out for help late Friday in Blooming Grove, Pike County, state police knew little about who attacked them or why.
Emergency vehicles raced to the scene but the shooting had already claimed a life of a state police corporal on his way out of the barracks, about to leave his shift.
Court papers say Corporal Bryon Dickson was in uniform, and left the barracks through the front door. That's when he was hit by two shots.
An employee at the barracks heard the shots, and tried to help Dickson, but was nearly hit by gunfire.
Trooper Alex Douglass arrived for his shift and was hit at the doorway and fell, but was able to crawl inside to safety.
Four shots total were fired in a matter of a minute and half.
Court papers say the troopers at the barracks then drove a vehicle to the front, using it to shield themselves from gunfire and pulled Corporal Dickson's body inside.
Now, state police say they know who was behind the attack: Eric Frein.
"Found in his room, spent casings like ones used at shooting at Blooming Grove," said Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan.
"We've released the name and a picture, and Pike County stands strong supporting Pennsylvania State Police," said Pike County Sheriff Phil Bueki.
Sheriff Bueki said police are committed to bringing Frein to justice, and fast. He urges the public to be careful.
"Let us do our job, stay in the home. It is quite nerve racking, and reason to be. We have a person out here who thinks very little of life and law enforcement."
