Pool reopening in Scranton makes a splash with swimmers

The Weston Park pool was closed all day Thursday for maintenance right in the middle of a heat wave.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Kids wasted no time diving back into the water in Scranton after the Weston Park pool reopened on Friday.

"You don't want them cooped up inside, so you take them out to the pool," Delroy Scott said. "It's hot."

The Weston Park pool made some waves on Thursday as it was closed in the middle of this heat streak. Scranton officials say it was shut down for cleaning after having more swimmers than usual.

Marie Fazio of Dunmore brought her kids to the pool Thursday, only to find the gate locked up.

"He's autistic, so when we got to the gate, it was very traumatic for him because he couldn't get in the pool," Fazio said. "It took me about 20 minutes to calm him down, and it's like there's not even an alternative place to go right now. "

The Weston Park pool is the only city pool in Scranton open this summer. The others are closed for renovations. And that left Sarah Richards of Carbondale without options.

"Nowhere, because my kids don't like going up to the lake, which means this is the only resort we have," Richards said.

But with the pool once again filled with swimmers, it's keeping kids and tempers cooled off during this heat wave.

"I was so happy when we got to the gate," Fazio said. "My son was so happy. I was like, 'Thank God' because it was the hottest day so far."
