EAST STROUDSBURG -- The number of students at East Stroudsburg University now sick with what doctors call a gastrointestinal infection is well over 100.

What's disturbing is that no one knows how it started, or who might be next to get the illness.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is now assisting the university to interview sick students trying to determine how this infection started.

So far, 114 students are sick and some staff have reported being ill as well.

Now the university is rushing to stop this infection from spreading any further.

A steady stream of students in and out of the health center as East Stroudsburg University reports more cases of what state health officials are calling a gastrointestinal infection.

Junior Shanique Collins lives in the dorms. She's feeling sick, and her boyfriend isn't doing much better.

"He started to throw up in the middle of the night, I would guess around 12 or 1," said Collins.

At the health center on campus, students are getting packages of Gatorade, medicine, and other items such as masks. Collins doesn't feel like it's enough.

"I feel like school should be shut down or something because this is just crazy, especially if it's a viral thing that's contagious," said Collins.

Megan Hamill says she's only fighting a sinus infection and was nervous about going to the health center for a prescription.

"We were like maybe we shouldn't go there because everyone's sick there. I might pick it up or something, but I needed some medicine so I wanted to make sure I could go and get it," said Hamill.

School officials said 54 of those sick students came to Pocono Medical Center's ER for treatment. So far eight of them had to be admitted to the hospital.

Students say they think the number of actual sick students and staff is even higher.

"I think there's a lot more. I know that one of my friends had it yesterday and he seemed to be one of the first people to get it, and he didn't go to the ER or anything, just drank Gatorade and slept," said ESU sophomore Mackenzie Maczko.

The department of health is interviewing students to try to determine what caused this GI infection outbreak.

ESU does not believe this is food related.

Hand sanitizers are now all across campus and staff is working to thoroughly sanitize all areas.

Students all received an email outlining steps they should take if they feel sick and how to prevent spreading this infection.

As of right now there is no indication that classes will be canceled.
