EAST STROUDSBURG -- East Stroudsburg University is working to contain a serious stomach virus.

University officials tell us a total of 42 students and staff have come down with the bug in less than 24 hours.

Officials tell us this virus is affecting students who live on and off campus at East Stroudsburg.

Out of the 42 confirmed cases, some have been treated at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. Others have been treated at the on-campus health center.

The university does not believe that this virus is food related, but they are now taking many precautions across campus.

"We've been in communication with the PA Health Department and one of the things we're doing in our cafe to contain the situation is to sanitize thoroughly, to have hand sanitizer available," said Dr. Doreen Tobin , East Stroudsburg University vice president of student affairs.

Self-service food stations such as pizza and desserts are now shut down in campus dining halls.

Officials at East Stroudsburg University say they will continue to monitor the situation, but as of right now, classes will continue as scheduled.

Anyone who begins showing symptoms is encouraged to contact the on-campus health center.
