Truck stuck in sinkhole after storms in central Pennsylvania

The vehicle is banged up, with the driver's door ajar and back tailgate seemingly askew. The driver climbed out of the sinkhole with minor injuries.

JUNIATA COUNTY, Pa. — Heavy storms across central Pennsylvania last night had many residents waking up to extensive damage this morning.

A large sinkhole opened up on Route 333 in Juniata County, trapping a truck at the bottom. It is unclear exactly when the sinkhole opened or when the truck got stuck, but heavy rain fell for hours last evening and overnight.

“I figured if the water filled up again that it would go across the road without any issue," said Dakota Silks, who lives a few doors from where the sinkhole opened. "But I guess it was too much for the road to hold back.”

The vehicle is banged up, with the driver's door ajar and the back tailgate seemingly askew. Silks said he spoke with the driver after the incident. He said the driver fell in while he was driving to work early Friday morning.

“From what I talked to [the driver] about, he never saw it until it was too late," said Silks.

FOX43 reached out to the wife of the driver who fell into the sinkhole. She said her husband has a few bruises and is feeling sore, but is otherwise feeling okay after the incident.

Route 333 is closed between Market Street in Port Royal and the intersections of Main, Mill and Pine Streets in Thompsontown Borough, according to 511PA.
