TEXAS TOWNSHIP -- A major construction project in Wayne County is causing problems for businesses and drivers during the busy summer months.
Visitors take Route 6 to go shopping, dine out, or on their way to and from New York and New Jersey.
For the better part of a year, a stretch of Route 6 in Texas Township has been under construction.
"It's been rough, truly rough. Cars and the road, they tried to pave it so we can take it one way. It's really bumpy. They're really slow here," said Yolanda Mercado of Hawley.
Mercado drives through the area often to pick up things at the store or to mail packages.
"You can't get in. For us it's very hard to get into this place," she said.
The $3 million project is supposed to wrap up in November, according to PennDOT. Before that happens, The Alpine has its annual Oktoberfest at the end of August for three days in which Route 6 will still be down to two lanes creating headaches for drivers.
"It's a pain getting out mainly. Traffic in Honesdale is bad enough. For a small town, it's terrible. This is just making it worse," said Lance Peak of Honesdale.
Crews even hit a gas line Tuesday adding to the traffic troubles. Once the project is wrapped up, the road will be wider with better drainage, sidewalks, and curbs. In the meantime, businesses have to bear the brunt of the construction season.
"It's definitely been a struggle. People say too much going on they keep going and don't want to deal with it," said Kyra Hopkins with TechPro PCs.
The contractor hopes to finish earlier than planned but that is still a couple of months away.
