Bridge projects underway in Monroe County

Construction season is kicking into high gear. A pair of projects in Monroe County's West End could cause drivers to be delayed.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — The big orange signs are up on Route 115 in Chestnuthill Township, letting drivers know this bridge is set to close on Friday, August 2nd.

Heather Fitzner drives on this road every day to take her daughter to and from work.

"It's going to make our commute a little longer. We are from Saylorsburg, so 15 minutes is what it is ordinarily, but now, it's going to obviously take us a little longer because we are going to have to find alternate ways to get around here or just wait in traffic," said Fitzner.

Heckman Orchards, in an effort, is not far from the bridge construction. Customers there tell Newswatch 16 there's always some kind of work to be done.

"I mean all of the bridges have to be replaced or repaired, there's a lot that have been under construction lately so if they have to be done, they have to be done. So, what are you gonna do," said Tony Lillo from Albrightsville.

"Obviously, we know these things need to be fixed and they have to do it when they have time to do it so we are hoping the impact to us will be minimal," said Kelly Green, Heckman Orchards assistant manager.

PennDOT has a partial detour in place.

Southbound traffic will be taken to Gilbert Road to Route 209, then to Weir Lake Road back to Route 115. Kelly Green, assistant manager at Heckman's, says many of their customers know their way around.

"A lot of our customer base is equipped to knowing a lot of the back roads already, so they will be able to find their way around even If it means taking a few extra minutes, they'll still be able to get here," explained Green.

Another bridge project in the west end is set to start on Monday, August 5th.

This bridge on Route 209 in Gilbert will be under construction from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. with lane restrictions.

When crews are not working, the bridge will be open.

"I'm glad that is going to be overnight, it will make it a little easier," said Lillo.

"We're going to try our best so but we understand that construction has to be done to make it better for everybody, it's just going to make things challenging that's all," said Fitzner.

PennDOT expects both projects to be done by the end of August.
