PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Pennsylvania archery hunting season starts this weekend, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) wants hunters to be safe, respectful and follow Pa.'s statewide archery hunting rules.

Oct. 3 marks Mean Girls Day, the hit comedy drama from 2004. The film starred Lindsay Lohan and in a scene as her character, Cady Heron, she states, "On October 3rd, he [Jonathan Bennett] asked me what day it was." Lohan responds, "It's October 3rd." Since then, Oct. 3 has been known as Mean Girls Day.

The PGC posted a Facebook post on Oct. 3 that announced reminders and tips for archery hunters to keep in mind. Each reminder is play on the film but stresses an important message for those looking to take part in archery season starting Saturday, Oct. 5.

On Wednesdays, we wear camo

The PGC reminds hunters that they do not have to wear fluorescent orange while hunting deer, bear or elk in Pa. during archery season. Hunters must wear fluorescent orange during muzzleloader seasons if hunters are carrying both archery and muzzleloading equipment. Additional details regarding requirements for wearing fluorescent orange and archery hunting can be found here.

To prevent hunters from being "winded" by a doe, the PGC recommends cleaning hunter's hunting clothes. A scent-free, UV-free detergent will help prevent hunters from being spotted. Baking soda also gets rid of scents. Also, storing clothes in a scent-free container like a rubber tote or storage bag helps. Using scent elimination sprays from the hunter's head to toes and outside your hunting spot can significantly cut down tracking. Lastly, tracking wind shifts or having a wind detection device will help from being "winded" as well.

You can't sit with us

The PGC emphasized the importance of hunter safety and wearing a harness when in a tree stand. Pennsylvania has seen hundreds of serious accidents from tree stand-related accidents, and they can be avoidable by wearing a full-body safety harness. More tips on hunting safety can be found here.

The limit does not exist

Archery season dates are as follows.

Statewide: Oct. 5-Nov. 22 and Dec. 26-Jan. 20, 2025

Sunday hunting days: Nov. 17 (statewide) and Nov. 24 (2B, 5C and 5D only).

One antlered deer per hunting license year is allowed, and one antlerless deer with each required antlerless license. More information on legal hunting hours can be found here.

She doesn't even go here

Hunters should be aware of their surroundings when it comes to private property areas or purple paint. There are over 1.5 million acres of public game lands, but the PGC wants hunters to be courteous and respectful of others. Hunters should give one another their own space and should not attempt to steal others' property. More information on Pa. state game lands can be found here.
