Shamokin Area still reeling after winning Coal Bucket game first time in 29 years

The Indians posted a 21-0 shut out over Mount Carmel Area

SHAMOKIN, Pa. — It's been nearly 30 years since Shamokin Area defeated Mount Carmel Area in the annual coal bucket game.  On Friday night, the Indians not only broke that losing streak, but shutout the Red Tornadoes 21 to nothing.  Shamokin remains undefeated this season. The team is proud of what they've accomplished so far this season and this win was as big as it gets.

"It's kind of like unrealistic sometimes because it's something that we dreamed of, something that we wanted to happen since this summer, and we made it happen," said Zakem Clinton.

"For just the longest time. It was like a mental hurdle that they couldn't overcome. But along came this group of kids that know how to win and they know how to win together. To knock off a program like that and to do it in the fashion that we did, by pitching a shutout and we felt like we completely dominated all the phases of the game. So it was about as good of a night as we could have hoped for," said head coach Marc Persing.

Shamokin will host Athens at Kemp Memorial Stadium in the first round of playoffs on Friday.
