Wyoming Area field hockey team hopes to continue program's success this year

The Lady Warriors are back for redemption after a trip to the state final two years ago and a district championship loss last season.

EXETER, Pa. — Field hockey is life for these girls from Wyoming Area. The team having success in the past few years, creating a program that expects to win.  A state runner-up in 2022 and coming up short last year, losing to Lackawanna Trail in the District II Field Hockey "A" Championship game.

The Lady Warriors are taking notes from last season and putting that towards a run at redemption this year.

"We're trying to bring back a lot of the things we did the first year. We just need to work. That district title game last year, that stings for everyone. It still stings to think about it," said head coach Bree Bednarski.

"We did have a great past two seasons. Honestly, we did come up short last season, which didn't feel the greatest, so we're going to take that feeling and try to just power through this season," said senior Lyla Rehill.

The Lady Warriors have a talented team for this season and 10 of them are seniors. Some of them will even be continuing their field hockey careers in college at the D1 level.

"We have Lyla going to Rutgers, Ella McKernan going to Michigan State but, you know, it's really exciting to see them and I want to see how all the girls do this season," Bednarski said.

"I'm super proud of myself and the team like we all wouldn't be able to do it without each other," said senior Ella McKernan.

Wyoming Area doesn't just find its success in one or two players. The girls say it's a team effort and their bond is why they believe this team is the one to beat.

"It's been amazing and it's just like every day we know what we were and what we can be and we just want to keep getting to that point and working hard," McKernan said.

"Continuing with what we've been doing, working hard as a team, like using our teammates. Nothing's selfish, nothing's forced," said Rehill.

Only time and talent will tell how far this Warriors team will go this season.
