Hughesville Girls Tennis success stems from friendship

The Spartans are the District IV runner-ups from a season ago and have no doubt they can make it back to the district title match.

MONTOURSVILLE, Pa. — Hughesville girls’ tennis returns with the top singles player in District IV. Sarah Buck won the District IV singles tournament after the team was eliminated from the District IV Championships.

The Spartans are 8-0 in the regular season and want to repeat what they accomplished last season; go undefeated through the regular season and this time have that one extra win in the postseason.

“I think we've prepared a lot. We've practiced all summer. We're definitely ready to try and fix what we didn't do last year,” said Buck.

After the team fell to Jersey Shore in the district title match, they began working right away. The Monday after school let out for the summer, the girls came in twice a week at 7 a.m. to being preparation for the fall season.

“I think working over the summer really has helped us tremendously,” said senior, Annaka Bruder.

Bruder plays No.2 singles for the Spartans. She’s been with the squad since her freshman year, and contributes the team’s success to their friendship off the court.

“Really just having the team really bond together. We definitely crack a lot of jokes. We all- if we mess up, we can just laugh at each other and there's no drama. We're just really happy-go-lucky on the team and a lot of jokes get us through a lot of the times,” said Bruder.

Head coach Craig Weaver has coached the program since 2015. He reiterated the same sentiment as Bruder.

“They're like sisters that don't argue,” said Weaver. “They really, really get along. They help each other out, and I think that atmosphere is why we win so much.”
