He holds the national record of 634 lbs. in the bench press, dead lifts 684, and squats 871-those numbers made Steve Mann from Clarks Summit the US Open National Powerlifting champion last year. Now he tries to defend his title in Killeen Texas on June 23rd.
"We'll I'm just going to hit the numbers I can get. It's tough to get aggressive when you only have so many attempts so you really got to make every lift count and just don't mess up," said Steve Mann.
At the age of 37 Steve is Powerlifting more than he's ever lifted before and that's due in part to some increased flexibility, extra sleep now that his children are getting older, and as Steve puts it brain power-outsmarting his opponents with all his years of powerlifting.
"I'm a little smarter kind of like an older quarterback. I learned how not to do things over the years and I've been able to keep myself healthy the last couple of years and get the sleep I need," again said Steve.
When he isn't working for his company Geodis, family is first and foremost, along with his wife Jenny-their raising four children all under the age of 9- Jacob, Kaylee, Zach, and Kaitlyn.
"The sport of powerlifting has been great for me, but at the end of the day they could care less if I come in last place. They just want me to be their Dad and that's an awesome thing.
The world stage for powerlifting noses its way thru Norway in November, but before that, Steve Mann needs to tune up in Texas.
