In just his second victory of the season, Martin Truex Jr. and the No. 78 Toyota took the checkered flag in the Pocono 400, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway.
"Well we had to come from a bad pit stop, 14th place, and we had to pass a lot of cars," Truex Jr. said. "So, it's really difficult to do here as everybody knows and we got all the way to second there at the end and the 18, us and the four were just so equally matched it felt like, speed-wise and whoever was out front was going to win it and we took a gamble. We stayed out in that caution when 18 pitted and the only reason we did that really was because we knew yesterday in practice, we were good on old tires, we were good on scuff tires and we ran some of our fastest laps of the race at the end. So, it was the right call and great job by my crew chief to make it."
"We were probably a 6th or 7th place car. I thought we'd be a little bit better today, but maybe the cooler temperatures made everybody a little quicker and all that, but good finish for us," Kyle Larson said after finishing second. "The 78 and us, we were able to stay up front and hold off those guys with fresher tires. So, happy about that. I wasn't sure how it was going to work out. I knew I would need some good restarts because once I felt like if one or two of those guys pass me, the rest of them would probably eat me up."
"We made our final stop, or what we all thought would be our final stop when we were in the lead," Kyle Busch added after a third place finish. "We were running around there and they called debris in turn one and when I came back around and looked at it, that's what it looked like to me."
"We've also battled a lot more, I feel like, adversity on the racetrack than we did last year," Truex Jr. added. "It seemed like last year, everything went our way and this year, it's been a lot tougher. We've had more trouble on pit road. We've had more penalties. We've had a few efforts in qualifying that weren't quite there and we've had to battle back from that. So, it's been a little tougher to come by this year, but I feel like as far as where the team is, the speed of our cars, the job everybody's doing, we're right there and we showed it today."
