Crash deaths during July 4 holiday week increased since 2023, state police say

All crash deaths, crashes, arrests, and citations increased from last year, state police report shows.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Pennsylvania State Police found that this year’s crash deaths during the July 4 holiday week increased from last year. It rose from 3 to 11 people killed.

Troopers investigated 774 car crashes, made 556 DUI arrests and 28,429 citations over July 3-7, according to their Independence Day weekend enforcement report. Each number has risen since 2023.

Out of 774 crashes, 64 were DUI-related and 11 were fatal. This is higher than last year with 668 total crashes, 59 DUI-related and three deaths. Four of the fatal crashes this year were DUI-related, compared to none in 2023.

The number of people injured also increased this year to 224, compared to 194 in 2023, the report said.

Citations were given to those speeding, not wearing a seatbelt and not securing children with their seatbelts. Speeding citations were given out the most compared to the other two categories, the report showed.
