Game Commission: bear illegally killed in Luzerne County

An investigation is underway in Nescopeck after the Game Commission said a bear was unlawfully killed after roaming through a neighborhood.

NESCOPECK, Pa. — An investigation is underway after a bear was killed illegally in Luzerne County.

It's a sight people in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania see often this time of year. Black bears getting up close and personal with garbage cans or strolling through neighborhoods.

"Bears are to be respected; they are fast and powerful creatures. This is sort of the high time for bear activity. If anything, we will be seeing more activity as the month progresses," said PA Game Commission spokesperson Travis Lau.

Travis Lau with the Pennsylvania Game Commission says that's because many young bears are now going off on their own to find their new home range.

Neighbors tell Newswatch 16 it's uncommon to see a bear in the area but say it wasn't acting aggressively. The Game Commission says the bear was later shot and killed by someone who lived nearby.

Officials are now reminding people that all wildlife in the state of Pennsylvania is protected.

"So bears included, that is generally unlawful to kill wildlife outside of an established hunting season with lawful methods by licensed hunters," added Lau.

Lau said the case is currently under investigation and can't release any other details.

What should you do if you come across a bear in your neighborhood or yard?

"If you are confronted with a bear, simply alert that bear to your presence, whether that be a whistle or talking softly, and all encounters, in the event you can remain calm, is a good thing and to your benefit," explained Lau.

Officials say if you are concerned about a bear or notice any aggression, it's best to give the game commission a call so wardens can come out and take a look.
