PENNSYLVANIA, USA — One of the hottest days of the year is expected today, and thousands of people could spend the day without electricity, fans, and air conditioning.

A line of severe thunderstorms came through Monday night. In Lackawanna County, the roof of Cook's Foods in Old Forge was partially ripped off.

Many trees and power lines are down across the area. The intersection of Moosic St. and Meadow Ave. in Scranton had no power, forcing businesses to close. In Dunmore, the Drinker Street area was also without power.

PPL reports about 10,000 homes and businesses with no electricity.  Many of them are in Scranton, Forest City, and the area north of Carbondale.

UGI also reports thousands without power, mostly in the Back Mountain and Harvey's Lake Area of Luzerne County.

The outage numbers have been coming down. Both companies hope to have everyone back online by 11 p.m. Tuesday.
