SCRANTON, Pa. — President Joe Biden announced Sunday afternoon that he is dropping out of the race and will focus on finishing his term in the White House.
"In some ways a little unexpected, but also maybe time for it," said James Bird, Dunmore.
Newswatch 16 spoke with voters in Lackawanna County.
James Bird of Dunmore says he was going to vote for President Biden, but he thinks this was the right move, "He was not trending well, and I think if the Democrats are going to have a chance, this will be a necessary change."
President Biden often refers to himself as a kid from Scranton. People we spoke with from his hometown agreed with his decision to drop out of the race.
"Well, if it's his decision, I think it's a good thing because he does show signs of cognitive impairment, and it's time to think of the party," said Ann Flynn, Scranton.
"If he's unwell, then I don't think he deserves to be running a country. I think it was a good step to step down and say hey, I care about the country. I want someone who is healthy and able and willing to step up to it," said Michael Brown, Dunmore.
"I think it's really crazy. We probably really needed him right now," said Ariana McCloe, Scranton.
Ariana McCloe of Scranton says she hopes this means she can vote for Vice President Kamala Harris, "She's a black female, so I just feel like different outcomes; we can't have the same thing over and over for years. Nothing is changing. I think she brings a lot of change."
Harris does not automatically become the Democratic nominee but President Biden did endorse her as his choice.
