A look at when and how the ballots will be counted in Luzerne County

Newswatch 16's Nikki Krize stopped by a polling place the morning before the election.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — Voters vote, and election workers calculate the results. It sounds easy, but the task is daunting for that part of the story.

The morning of the election, Nikki Krize stopped by Penn Place, home of the Luzerne County election bureau.

State law says workers cannot start processing ballots until 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

But the actual counting won't start until the polls close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Different this year, the counting of ballots will not stop overnight.

Luzerne County received a more than million-dollar election integrity grant, which pays for things like workers who will keep the count going as long as necessary.

Security measures have been added here, too.

Non-election departments, like the tax claim office, will move operations out of Penn Place and over to the county courthouse on North River Street for the day.

The justice department says it is monitoring elections in Luzerne County.

Officials say they want to ensure that federal civil rights laws are being followed.

If you still have your mail-in ballot in Luzerne County, you can return it to Penn Place between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
