Purple Pennsylvania: Candidates from both parties focus on the Keystone State

With eight weeks left before Election Day, you may have noticed a lot of candidates in Pennsylvania recently.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — With only two months left before Election Day, presidential and vice-presidential nominees from both parties are ramping up their campaigns in Pennsylvania.

Former President Trump's town hall in Harrisburg is the republican campaign's third stop in the Keystone State in the last week.

Democratic presidential nominee, Vice-President Kamala Harris, will be in Pittsburgh for the next 5 days.  Her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz touched down in Lancaster this morning,

The reason they're all here?

Because Pennsylvania is a critical swing state, full of voters who don't always cast ballots along party lines.

"I am a registered democrat and I'm not ashamed to admit it, but that don't mean I'm going to vote democrat. Because we got a little while to go here, I'm undecided right now." said Paul Durdren of West Scranton.

But Pennsylvania wasn't always like this. Being battleground state is more of a recent phenomenon. Newswatch16's Matt Petrillo reported the moment Pennsylvania shifted during the 2016 election.

"Election workers say that voters turned out in big numbers in support of Donald trump that ultimately led to Luzerne County to flip from blue to red and the rest of the state followed." said Petrillo in 2016.

Luzerne county remained red in 2020, and it continues to be one of the most contentious counties in all of Pennsylvania, meaning both parties are going to continue to ramp up their campaigns.

Although it may be the most contentious, Luzerne County isn't the only swing county in Pennsylvania.

On election night, also keep an eye on Erie County and Northampton County, which both have bounced between democrats and republicans in recent elections.
