Rainy weather is no problem at tulip farm in Wyoming County

Newswatch 16's Melissa Steininger takes us to the one place that is happy to see the cold and the rain.

WYOMING COUNTY, Pa. — All this wind and days of nonstop rain are really taking a toll. At Brown Hill Farms, just north of Tunkhannock in Wyoming County, the fields are more like ponds.

"They can handle the water now because they have a root system on them. But if we had this rain in the fall, it would be very dangerous to plant them because they could rot," Michelle Brown explained.

While baby animals are staying hunkered down inside, workers are taking the brunt of the elements outside, something they don't seem to mind.

"I don't mind the cooler weather for the tulips because it'll help them grow stronger and taller. They're supposed to grow slower; they're not supposed to grow really fast," Brown said.

On days like this where the wind is so strong, the tulips are still rising up against all odds.

"We've had tulips with icicles hanging off of them and then be fine by the afternoon. So, once we got over the first year of being scared, they really can handle a lot."

It's this blustery season that will allow all 500,000 bulbs to blossom into a picture-perfect view in just a few short weeks.

"It's going to be a kaleidoscope of color," Brown said.  "It's just a really magical thing to share with people, and I'm going to do it as long as I can."

Brown Hill Farms' tulip fields and pick-your-own tulips will open at the end of the month.

🌷I know this weather isn’t fun. It’s cool and not a lot of sun , but it’s perfect for growing tulips. We are looking forward to a great season this year. 4 weeks or less. 😊
