Lackawanna Trail supports field hockey, football teams ahead of history-making games

It's history in the making for the Lackawanna Trail Lions.

WYOMING COUNTY, Pa. — It's history in the making for the Lackawanna Trail Lions. The school took a break from Friday classes to celebrate the historic moment, as the field hockey team and the undefeated football team each pursued a state title.

Carolena Ryon is a senior on the team.

"It's really special that we both get to go to states at the same time. I think it's a motivator for both football and field hockey. and the school is just so hyped for it," said Ryon.

For senior and field hockey midfielder Lauren Fahey, her mind is set on soaking up these last moments on the field.

"I haven't been paying attention in class much, I've kind of just talked to my friends about field hockey. We're just so confident we're going to win," said Fahey.

It's been 38 years since the field hockey team took home the state title back in 1985. It's the only one in school history, and they're looking to do it again. This time, against Oley Valley in the state championship in Mechanicsburg on Saturday. They have the support of the undefeated football team and quarterback Stephen Jervis.

"They come to all of our games, we try to make it to all of their games, keep the student section going and you know, just help them, do whatever we can to have a positive impact of what they do on the field," he said.

The football team is also looking to do what they couldn't previously in the state title back in 2018. Now they're looking to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals against Minersville on Friday. Senior Alex Castellano says he's leaving it all on the field.

"You're nervous every week coming into school, and everyone is talking about 'nice win on Friday' Everything you know, you're always focused on the next task at hand," he added.

For these senior athletes, it's a moment that'll be etched in Lackawanna Trail history. And a hope to bring state titles back home to Wyoming County.

"I think it's just an attest just to the work ethic of a small-town community and school. I think it's a lot of the backgrounds that we come from, hard-working families. And I think it's just a great testament to our school," said Jervis.

Lackawanna Trail's football team defeated Minersville 40-0 Friday night.
