Gearing up for the Rattlesnake Round-Up in Noxen

This isn't your average fire department fundraiser. In Noxen, it's all about the snakes. Newswatch 16's Emily Kress tells us more about the Rattlesnake Round-Up.

NOXEN, Pa. — The slithery creatures send many people running for the hills, but for the natives of Noxen, there's a whole weekend dedicated to the rattlesnake.

"The Rattlesnake Round-Up has been in Noxen since 1972. The fire department took it over in 1986, and it's just a huge part of this town," said Fire Chief Jonny Headman.

Even folks from out of state travel to Noxen to compete in the round-up.

Here's how it works: Hunters venture out into the woods, searching for the biggest snakes they can find, competing for different prizes.

Spectators pack the stands at the Noxen Fire Company Fairgrounds to see what the hunters brought in.

"It's mostly educational, but there is still a competition part of it. The education part, you're looking to make sure the snakes are healthy, you're informing the public of why you are doing through the whole process," explained Assistant Chief Alaisha Sherwood.

Sherwood has been rattlesnake hunting for 19 years. She says most hunters have their go-to spots, but this year, they may have to search a bit more.

"Last year, the weather was super-hot, so they were out traveling a bit more. This year hasn't been as dry, and we haven't had as many hot days, so you're looking in different spots than last year," said Sherwood.

Don't worry, no snakes are harmed. They're taken back where they were found.

The round-up is the fire department's largest fundraiser of the year. It also features music, food, games, rides, and lots of vendors.

"Volunteers are declining. Equipment, trucks, fuel, everything is going up. Prices are going up non-stop, so the odds are really stacked against us. So, this helps us keep the lights on and keeps fuel in the trucks," said Headman.

The Rattlesnake Round-Up runs Thursday through Sunday.  Gates open at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. over the weekend.

Organizers also added more parking with a shuttle service.
