Concerns in Tunkhannock after immigration rumors spread on social media

Authorities are pushing back against social media posts that claimed thousands of migrants were being dropped off in town.

TUNKHANNOCK, Pa. — The rumors on social media about migrants being dropped off here really began to pick up steam over the last ten days or so.

Last week,  posts saying busloads of migrants were being dumped in Tunkhannock spread across the internet. Yesterday, it was posted by an account with 444.2k followers on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Rumors on the internet, they persist, and they expand, and people work themselves into a lather sometimes," said District Attorney Joe Peters, Wyoming County.

Posts on Tunkhannock-specific Facebook pages say the migrants were taken to the Prince Hotel in downtown Tunkhannock to eat and sleep.

The manager of the hotel did not want to be on camera because he said he'd been getting calls from people all week.

He tells Newswatch 16 he has never had any migrants stay or eat at his hotel.

"If it was all true, and if they were here, they have disappeared, and even if they were here, there is no indication of anything illegal. Obviously, if it's an old photo, then what everybody thought was happening here never happened, and that would account for nothing seeing anyone or anything unusual," said D.A. Peters.

Again, police in Tunkhannock say don't call them. They are no longer answering any questions about the matter.
