Victim identified in deadly Wayne County fire

A 77-year-old man was badly burned during a barn fire

MILANVILLE, Pa. — A 77-year-old man died this weekend from burns he suffered in a fire in Wayne County, authorities said.

Michael Kane, of Damascus Township, was pronounced dead just before 3 a.m. Sunday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where he was flown following a fire at his property on Butternut Flats.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio said Kane suffered burns on roughly half of his body.

The fire broke out at his property at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. State police said Kane's son noticed the barn was on fire and rushed to retrieve a hose from behind the family home.

Kane went into the burning barn because he didn't realize his son was getting a hose, state police. He thought that either he, or the family horse, were still inside.

It remained unclear Monday how the fire started, but state police say they do not believe the fire was suspicious.
