WAYMART, Pa. — The rain in Waymart wasn't stopping these classic cars from lining up on the front lawn of the Salvation Army's Ladore Lodge.
"I feel bad for them because they shine their cars and get them perfect. Then they come up here in the rain," said Vietnam veteran, Don Wilmot.
It didn't stop the veterans from coming out either, for that matter. The day started with a special ceremony honoring those who served. The rest of the day was spent swapping and sharing stories of brotherhood.
"It's so nice for them to have us up here and to see other veterans. It's like old home day for us," said Wilmot.
For many veterans, their sacrifice of service is becoming more apparent with age.
"Everyone has their own individual illnesses or whatever. Mine just happens to be agent orange, the Camp Lejune poison water," added Wilmot.
Leaving many with challenges on how to access services. said Marine, Nick Hawkey of Monroe County says he looks forward to this event every year.
"I think a lot of veterans don't know what they're entitled to, they don't know where to get help. I just started going to the VA in Allentown for my issues. I can't believe how wonderful they are, how much they help," said Hawkey.
Which is why nonprofits like Camp Freedom are there to help.
"Sometimes they lose that camaraderie when they separate from service, or if they're no longer with their buddies out there, so it's very important to bring that awareness," said Bill Gillette, Camp Freedom Volunteer.
Helping those who may not know where to turn.
"They have no idea who's available- unless another veteran talks to them and says get over here or there. A lot of them die with problems that could be solved a lot sooner," said Wilmot.
A thank you for our veterans that comes every year, rain or shine.
