HONESDALE, Pa. — For some of us, it's time to take down those holiday decorations. Did anything break during the holidays? A strand of lights stop working?
Greater Honesdale Partnership Executive Director Sandi Levens says they will take some of those items off your hands to recycle them.
"Christmas lights, wrapping paper, garland. Even if you go back to Halloween, if you're cleaning out your cupboard you could do those Halloween plastic buckets, plastic ornaments," said Levens.
The upcoming drive is the kickoff to their Safe, Clean, and Green initiative. In doing their part to keep the community clean, they have also been collecting coffee pods to recycle.
"It keeps everything out of the landfill, and so many things go into landfill, and it's just getting bigger and bigger, and this is just one part," Levens said.
The Safe, Clean, and Green program helps the planet as well as the organization's mission.
"It's a great reflection on us as a designated town that we have fulfilled the requirement of maintaining that designation. When you're a designated town in the state of Pennsylvania, you just have so many more opportunities that are made available to you with economic revitalization," said Vice President Brian Wilken, Greater Honesdale Partnership.
The holiday decorations may not bring cheer to your home any longer, but they will be brought to life again.
"They take these items, recycle them, and create other objects benches, bird feeders, planters, all different things. So, anything that we can do for our earth and the environment, that's what we're here to do," said Levens.
The collection will be held on Wednesday, January 17, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Greater Honesdale Partnership office on Commercial Street in Honesdale. You can recycle wrapping paper, ornaments, string lights, streamers, confetti, tinsel, garlands, balloons, banners, plastic flowers, ribbons, and bows.
The organization is also looking for sponsorships from the community to help offset the costs of the program.
