HONESDALE -- After three decades in business, a gift shop in Wayne County is closing.
Country Dawn used to have locations in the Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Mount Pocono areas. Now, longtime customers are learning the remaining store in Honesdale will close in May.
Country Dawn gift shop employee Joann Ostrander took down a hanging lamp she just sold at the store in Honesdale, just one of the many things 20 to 50 percent off in the going-out-of-business sale.
It's a sale that's also a goodbye.
"It's become kind of a generational thing, when I've seen little children grow into young women and do shopping as well," Ostrander said.
This store has been in Honesdale for 34 years and at this location on Main Street for 15 years. But the owner tells us a new landlord recently bought the building and has other plans for this space.
"I think it's crazy. It seems like it's been here forever; it's been here as long as I've been alive, that's for sure," said Kaelin Canfield.
Canfield and her sister came to check out the deals.
"I know a lot of girls I work with have been trying to come in to get what they can because there are so many great things, so much to look at."
There are even regulars from other countries. Lauren Hemming is from England.
"I think it's heartbreaking. I love this store," Hemming said. "It's the first place I want to come when I come to visit the family, to look at all the treasures and all the gifts. I really enjoy shopping in here."
There is so much to sell and all of it will be on sale before the store closes at this location in a month and a half, but loyal customers hope it's not gone from Wayne County for good.
"We don't know what's next. As of now, we do know May 26 we will be closing at this location."
The owner of Country Dawn says for now there are no plans to reopen elsewhere.
There are plans for a brewpub to open in the spot Country Dawn is leaving on Main Street in Honesdale.
