'Pretty demanding' - Workers clear one storm, get ready for another

Borough workers in Honesdale continue cleanup from the weekend snow and get ready for heavy rain in the forecast.

HONESDALE, Pa. — Throughout Honesdale, staff with the borough's Department of Public Works have been working around the clock clearing snow.

"There is an awful lot of snow out there when it comes down, and there are only a handful of us out there. We had some guys off," said Joe Rulis, the new director of public works in Honesdale.

Rulis says Saturday's storm dropped about a foot of snow. Now, all that snow mixed with the rain is a recipe for flooding.

"We have a couple of problem areas in the borough that we keep an eye on that we pretty much know is going to flood, so today, we went out and continue going out to make sure there is no debris on the catch basins, and the drains are cleaned."

For people like Christopher Peroni of Bethany, flooding is also on his mind. He owns a former church on Maple Avenue just outside of Honesdale, which is known for flooding issues.

"It becomes a nightmare, and we've really had no solving of the issues, and it has happened about four times in the last seven years," Peroni said.

When he heard rain was to follow the weekend snowstorm, he told Newswatch 16 he began to brace for what is to come.

"It's going to be intense, so I am keeping vigilant and just going and visiting. I have some sandbags there and boards up to divert the water if it does plan on crossing the road."

For staff with public works, the work is only getting started after an already long weekend of cleanup.

"That's an awful lot to take on all at one time," Rulis said. "It's going to be pretty demanding over the next 48 hours for us."
