Veterans helping veterans with pickleball tournament

Veterans coming together to help support other veterans

WHITE MILLS, Pa. — The courts are packed inside Dropshots Pickleball near Hawley, so get those paddles ready to play for a cause. Dropshots is hosting a Tournament on Saturday to raise money for the nonprofit Wallenpaupack Vets for Vets.

The group helps veterans and first responders from Pike and Wayne Counties.

"With us, we are there for the immediate needs, not long-term, so it fills a gap. There is nothing in this area that does what we do," said Janet Sellitti with Wallenpaupack Vets for Vets.

"We'll help with any immediate needs that they have, and the more money we raise, the more people we can help. We help with things like roofing, we fix cars, we buy refrigerators," said Luann Newcomer with Wallenpaupack Vets for Vets.

Here's how the tournament works.

"It's a basic round-robin, so it will be randomized with team members. So, you'll come in, basically, get a number, and we'll put you on the courts with random people and play at least five games. And if you do really well, you'll move into the playoffs," explained Dropshots owner Richard Bowling.

Organizers say you don't have to be a pickleball pro to join in on the fun.

"The reason why it's so popular right now is because anybody can play. The court is really conducive to any skill level or any age," Bowling said.

Organizers hope a friendly game of pickleball will spread the word about the nonprofit's efforts to help those who served

"We really need to back up one another, servicemen and women and our first responders. So, if they need our help, they are always there for us, so we should be there for them," said John Kurzenberger, a U.S. Navy veteran.

This event will feature raffle baskets, 50/50, and a food truck.

It will be held this Saturday at Dropshots Pickleball in White Mills.

Join us for our next Charity Tournament on June 8th, 2024, where will be raising funds for Wallenpaupack Vets for Vets....
