Pedestrian safety concerns in Honesdale

Newswatch 16's Emily Kress shows us what's in the works to make the streets of Honesdale a bit safer.

HONESDALE, Pa. — Main Street in Honesdale is busy with people walking downtown.

Borough officials say recently, three people have been hit by cars while crossing the street.

"With the recent accidents that have happened, we are looking at some short-term fixes, so we are working with PennDOT about improving some of the visibility lines at each of the crosswalks," said Sandi Levens, Greater Honesdale Partnership executive director.

That's why the borough is partnering with PennDOT and safety advocates to stress the importance of pedestrian safety. They're reminding drivers to slow down and keep their eyes on the road.

"We want everyone to arrive alive and get home safe. We don't want them to get hit by cars, so we want everyone to enjoy the summer and have a great time, but also, we are in the deadliest days of summer; everyone is out and about," said safety advocate Eileen Miller.

For the long term, the Greater Honesdale Partnership is working to invest in a streetscape project to enhance safety.

"We're looking at bump outs, we're looking at improved crosswalks, streetlights, making it safer for people to walk all of those features are long term," said Levens.

The borough is also reminding drivers that thousands of people will be walking downtown this weekend for the borough's largest event of the year, the Roots and Rhythm Festival.

"With those people around it's a really important thing for us to be mindful of how we engage with our community," said Mayor Derek Williams.

Officials with PennDOT remind people that safety is a two-way street.

"If you are a pedestrian, make sure you're not on your cell phone and that you are paying attention. Be careful if you have earbuds in," said Liz Fabri, safety press officer with PennDOT.
