WAYNE COUNTY, Pa. — The rides are spinning here at the Greene Dreher Sterling Fair in Newfoundland. It's a fair activity every kid looks forward to.
"I love the rides; I saw a dragon coaster. It's like a coaster, a kid coaster, that's a dragon coaster," said Ian Jaramillo of Tafton.
"Bring the kids out so they can see all of the animals and ride the rides," said Adam Vitiello of Greeley.
GDS Fair president Anne Fox tells Newswatch 16 that the fair has been around for 107 years since a local teacher started it all.
"As a way for her students to display their artwork, items, and things they were doing at home, it just grew from there. Her name was Ellen Nevin, and in our merry-go-round, we have a horse dedicated to her," explained Fox.
Along with seeing the animals in the 4-H barn, other buildings are filled with exhibit items like homegrown vegetables, baked goods, and trees with the winning ribbons.
For many people, coming out to the fair means going straight for the food.
"We definitely love the lemonade, definitely get the lemonade then we'll get funnel cakes and blooming onions for sure," said Vitiello.
Organizers say thanks to the nice weather, attendance has been on the rise from previous years. And there is still plenty of time to check out what's new.
"We have entertainment in our arena that we haven't done in a while. We have bands in addition to all of our tractor pulls, truck pulls, demolition derby next Saturday, and all of those fun things," said Fox.
The GDS fair in Newfoundland runs through Sunday.
