SCRANTON, Pa. — Valhalla Veteran's Services is a non-profit based in Scranton that helps people who have served our country. Zamarra Varbel, a junior at Penn State Scranton, is helping set up the ball.
"They are there to serve first responders, veterans, active service members and their families for mental health services , especially in suicide prevention. They do all this counseling for little to no cost to the people they serve."
Some students, including Ava Compton, a junior from Penn State Scranton, are teaming up with Valhalla Veteran's Services to plan its biggest fundraiser of the year. Tomorrow is the group's Fall Ball. The event starts at 5 o'clock at Fiorelli's in Peckville and is open to the public.
"We have a huge basket raffle we're really excited for. We collected them through small businesses throughout the area. I think there's over 60 baskets this year."
Emma Bannon, a junior, says it's a good opportunity for them to work with veterans and first responders.
"First of all we're helping our community and building these connections with people we would have never met before. And second it's giving us this real world experience that is sometimes hard to get in a classroom setting."
