World War II monument in Mifflinburg undergoes more projects, thanks to excess in community donations

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker shows us the finished project.

MIFFLINBURG, Pa. — The Union County World War II Honor Roll at the Mifflinburg Community Park recently underwent a restoration project. The monument lists the names of the 2,260 people from Union County who served in the war. When Newswatch 16 showed the monument last December, it was in need of repairs. After the story aired, many of you sent in donations. Bronze work for the monument was finished in May.

"We needed $14,000 to cover the costs for the bronze; we ended up getting over $19,000, which afforded us the opportunity to get the other two projects done," said Doug Walter, Union County Veterans Foundation President.

Thanks to the excess funds, the Union County Veterans Foundation was also able to have the memorial walkway professionally cleaned for the first time in 20 years, and the sidewalk in front of the monument restored.

"After 20 years and they never sealed it when they first built the monument, and it doesn't even look like the same sidewalk now," said Walter.

Doug Walter is the president of the Union County Veterans Foundation. He says the memorial walkway was in need of some TLC.

"There was almost like an algae-type black film on some of the brick, and it's just—it's majorly better."

Walter tells us he's extremely thankful for everyone's support.

"It's just incredible how the community has supported us again and again; we just wanna be completely open and honest and let the people know that their money that they sent us was put to good use."

To mark Veterans Day, the Union County World War II Honor Roll will hold a service in November.
