Warmer weather has folks planning their gardens

Now that we've had a couple of warm days in a row, people are going outside and also thinking about their gardens.

MIFFLINBURG, Pa. — The weather is getting warmer, the sun is shining, and people are spending more time outside. That's good news for Reiff's Nursery and Greenhouses. The garden center has been in the Mifflinburg area for 35 years.

"Annuals, vegetables, herbs, perennials, trees, shrubs, fertilizers, soils—pretty much everything you need for a garden," said owner Joshua Reiff. "We probably do roughly 60 percent of our sales in the months of April and May. If you add June in there, I'd say you're closer to 70 percent."

Reiff describes his business as weather-dependent.

"The only thing with this time of the year, it can be very warm like today where it's in the 70s, then you look maybe four nights from now and it could be in the mid-30s. We're not out of the woods yet as far as the weather goes."

Even though it's nice out right now, Reiff says you should be careful about what you plant until mid-May. Many people lost their plants when a late frost hit last May.

"It is items like tomatoes, peppers, and especially things like zucchini, pickles, cucumbers, if they got hit by a frost or a freeze, you're probably going to lose them. You probably want to stay away from those until, I usually shoot for the second week of May."

Reiff says broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and cabbage don't mind frost or freezes. In fact, with those veggies, the colder the weather, the better the flavor.
