UNION COUNTY, Pa. — A teen died after a fire in a home in Union County.
Flames started in the home on Buffalo Road in Buffalo Township, near Mifflinburg, around 2 a.m. Friday.
State police investigators said a 16-year-old boy died. His name has not been released.
Troopers said the victim was unable to get out of a second-floor room after the fire started.
John Nolt, owner of Old Mill Creamery, says a friend alerted him to a huge fire. He thought it was his business that was on fire. When he arrived, he saw the home engulfed in flames.
"It wasn't very long until the heat all of a sudden got air, and there was a flash-over where flames came out every window, so it was very fast from that point on. There was so much heat buildup before anybody got here."
Nolt tells us he knew the family. His son also lives near the home that burned, and the family would often come into the creamery on a Saturday to buy milkshakes.
"It's just a small community where everybody recognizes everybody, even if we're not like first name interacting all the time. It's just hard, you know, to see that happen in our community," Nolt said. From living across from each other, you're always waving. They were always friendly, not that they worked together or did a lot of interaction, but as good neighbors, yes, he would've known him."
There is no word on what caused the fire.
