LEWISBURG -- A man was sentenced for a deadly crash that killed his girlfriend in Union County.
Christopher Libby could spend up to two years in jail for the crash that killed his girlfriend.
Libby, 20, walked into the Union County Courthouse in Lewisburg surrounded by friends and family. Hours later he left in police custody.
He was sentenced to three months to two years in jail for causing the crash that killed his 18-year-old girlfriend Emily Kunkel.
The crash happened in August of 2011 along Sportsman Club Road near Mifflinburg. Authorities say Libby was driving 89 miles an hour when his car went off the road and rolled several times. Libby's family does not believe he was speeding.
"I've known my cousin for a long time, and he didn't drive like that on the road," said Anthony Boyer.
In January, Libby pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter. The plea means he does not admit guilt but the judge in Union County sentenced him to as much jail time as allowed.
"I'm glad he's going to be in jail but I don't feel it's enough. We lost a cousin, we lost a niece, a daughter," said the victim's cousin Lindsey Eby.
"He's going to walk in three months. We walk to a cemetery, to a grave site," added Eva Bendas, the victim's cousin.
Libby's cousin, however, feels the sentence is too harsh.
"I do feel there should have been some punishment and that's coming from me, my own family. But not jail time," Boyer said.
For the first time since the crash, Libby addressed the victim's family and apologized in court. Kunkel's cousins wish the apology would have come sooner.
"I don't accept the apology. I lost my cousin."
Libby's family members say he is devastated by what happened.
"I still get phone calls from him at 2, 3 a.m. because he has nightmares about the accident," added Boyer.
Libby could face up to two years in jail. He is eligible for work release.
