Lewisburg's Piers Art Park to be renovated

Officials say the downtown venue will soon feature a stage, lighting and benches thanks to state grant money.

LEWISBURG, Pa. — There are 32 concrete standing stones tucked away on Cherry Alley in Lewisburg. There's even a mural on some of the stones. This will be known as Piers Art Park.

"It's like this forgotten space, but these are cool! These piers are really cool. I have pictures of someone doing acrobatics on top of one of them. I have people climbing on them. People are constantly tagging them, so art is wanted back here," Lynne Ragusea said.

For the last few years, Lewisburg has improved its recreational areas, particularly its downtown parks. Piers Art Park is next.

"We're planning on doing some floodplain restoration. We're doing some recreation improvements by connecting this directly to the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail," William Lowthert said.

Those improvements will only continue. Recently, the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership received a multi-year state grant for $100,000 to bring art to this park.

"We want to work on artistic lighting, maybe artistic benches, things that make this area stand out, make it a different, unique space here in Lewisburg," Ragusea said.

The park is being wired with electricity, and a small stage is being installed.

"This will be a more intimate environment for events, for music, for plays," Lowthert said.

The project is expected to start early next year.
