MIFFLINBURG -- A restaurant in Mifflinburg asked an artist to paint murals on the walls from photos of Union County in the old days.

When you walk into the Rusty Rail Brewing Company in Mifflinburg, you first see a 32-foot wide mural. Then you see more murals all around the restaurant. They all show Union County's history.

"They're very nice. Because we're not local, it creates questions like, 'Is that what Mifflinburg really looked like in its earliest days?'" said Jenny Snyder of Dalmatia.

The murals were all hand-painted by Jef McGreevy of Danville. He's been working on them since last summer and now there are more than a dozen.

Rusty Rail's general manager Rich Schrader says they borrowed pictures from the local historical society for accuracy.

"We reached out and we learned more about the town and the local areas and the era that we were focusing on. We found a lot of really cool history that this town has that a lot of people don't know about," Schrader explained.

The murals show rail cars and the lumber industry in Union County between 1910 and 1920. Schrader says some people even recognize their family members in the murals.

"When they walk in and they see this, it's usually eyes wide open, mouth open a little bit and they seem to be blown away by it."

The owners liked Jef's work so much that they actually brought him on as an employee to work on label art in the brewery in the future.

Ricky and Jenny Snyder of Dalmatia walked around the restaurant to see the murals after their meal.

"Unique, different. Down our way in lower Northumberland County, (it's) very rural, you don't see anything as such, so this is very unique to us," said Ricky Snyder.

McGreevy is currently working on more murals at the Rusty Rail Brewing Company.
