MIFFLINBURG, Pa. — Thursday was a busy day at David's Awesome Cookies and Pretzels in Mifflinburg. Most customers were buying the same thing: Reese's Pieces cookies.
"Because of Reese, we're doing Reese's cookies. So, we're doing 50 percent until May 17 of all of the profits of all of the Reese's cookies," Robin Walter explained.
Last Friday, Reese Conklin, 16, died when his house caught fire. The fire marshal said Reese was unable to escape the second floor of the home near Mifflinburg. Reese was a sophomore at Mifflinburg Area High School.
"I knew the family through soccer with my sons, playing with their sons, and we just wanted to give something back to them," said Kammy Frank, David's Awesome Cookies and Pretzels.
People and businesses throughout the area are holding fundraisers for the Conklin family.
"It's not just the community. We've had people from Sunbury call in and get a bunch for their workplace, the schools and such. It's just been really good," Walter said.
Makenzi Yearick works at Larry's Pizza and Subs in Mifflinburg.
"If we can give back a little bit, it's the least we can do," Yearick said. "We're donating 25 percent of all our sales today to the whole family, plus we have a tip jar out for whoever wants to donate, and they get that as well."
Yearick says Reese liked to eat at the restaurant, and his older brother used to work there.
"We just knew we had to do something. When something like this happens, it's sad, so we wanted to try and help the best we can."
A memorial fund has been set up in Reese Conklin's name at Service 1st Federal Credit Union on 52 East Chestnut Street in Mifflinburg.
