A World War II monument in Mifflinburg has been restored, thanks to community donations

Work was recently done at the Union County honor roll, just in time for Memorial Day. Newswatch 16's Nikki Krize shows us the improvements.

MIFFLINBURG, Pa. — Mifflinburg Community Park is home to the Union County World War II Honor Roll. The monument lists the names of the 2,260 people from Union County who served in the war.

When Newswatch 16 showed you the monument last December, it was in need of a lot of TLC. But after our initial story aired, many of you sent in donations.

"The bronze work cost a little over $14,000, and until we got finished, we had over $19,000 in donations. The community once again rallied around us," organizer Doug Walte said.

Doug Walter and his wife Tracy run the Union County Veterans Foundation. Because of those extra donations, the group is also able to do concrete work in front of the monument, which is the final step in the project.

"They never sealed the concrete when they built the monument. It was just something they didn't think of. It's pitted and it really doesn't look nice."

Doug's father-in-law and another veteran, Drew Machamer, designed the monument.

"I know they're watching down ... making sure that we keep after things, and we are. We're never going to allow the monument to be anything we would ever be ashamed of."

Walter says there will be a service in November to mark Veterans Day.
