SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, Pa. — After a soggy start to the ski season, the slopes are now packed with those taking advantage of the fresh powder.
Despite the warm weather this winter, Elk Mountain is happy to finally have Mother Nature on its side.
"A lot of people seem to have the day off. It's cold, obviously. And because it's so cold, we are making snow," said Bob Deluca, Elk Mountain Director of Marketing.
Skiers are bundled up, welcoming the bitter cold.
"Earlier, we weren't sure if we were going to get snow, ski places were shut down, but now they're open, and it's good to get out here," said Nicholas Walsh, Sullivan County.
Some of the youngest shared some tricks of the trade with Newswatch 16.
"It's kind of like roller skating, kind of, and you kind of just have to turn," said Tatum Henninger.
While others are showing the seasoned pros how it's done.
"I think they're teaching me now. They're teenagers. They're getting pretty good on their own," said Skip Dodge, Montgomery County.
With a bit of upcoming winter weather, Elk Mountain isn't just relying on Mother Nature. The resort will be making snow all week and opening four more trails.
"When it's cold like this, snow-making is much more efficient. You get a lot more snow with the water that you use," said Deluca.
"It's actually pretty good conditions. It's not too icy. A little bit of snow at the top where your skis sink in," said Walsh.
Enjoying every bit of ski season, rain or snow.
"We love skiing, me and the boys. So, any chance we get if the weather's good and the snow's good, we'll go take it," said Dodge.
Elk Mountain hopes to have 19 trails open for the weekend.
