Summertime road projects in full swing

Week-long projects are coming to an end today and others are starting this weekend and next week.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Summertime road projects are in full swing. Here is a look at what's happening in the next few days.

The week-long mill and fill roadwork in Dickson City wraps up tonight. Friday night's closure will be on the ramp from Main Avenue to Interstate 81 South in Dickson City starting at 8 p.m. and going until 6 a.m. tomorrow. Detours will be in place.

In Carbondale Township, there will be lane restrictions on Route 1019, Salem Mountain Road, from 7 this morning to 3 this afternoon for patching and cutting.

Starting this weekend, the ramp to the Casey Highway from Interstate 81 South will be closed for a bridge rehabilitation project. Detours will start each night at 8 p.m. and remain in effect until 6 a.m. tonight through Monday morning.

In Central Pennsylvania, a railroad crossing project begins next week. Drivers who use Route 4005, Market Street, in Snydertown, Northumberland County will be detoured starting this Sunday. Market Street will be closed from Camp Road to Furman Road and a detour using Route 61 will be in place. The work is expected to be completed by next Friday, weather permitting.

PennDOT officials also want to remind you that even though the worst of the heat is behind us, at least for now, you can still suffer from heat stroke inside a parked car with outside temperatures as cool as 60 degrees.

"60 might not seem like it's that hot out, but even with the windows cracked, it's really important to make sure you're not leaving your kids or your pets in the car even for a minute to run into the store," said Elizabeth Fabri, PennDOT Safety Press Officer.

Children can suffer from heatstroke faster because their bodies heat up five times faster than adults. It only takes about 10 minutes for the temperature inside a car to rise 20 degrees. PennDOT officials also say the summer is a good time to make sure your car is in good shape, too, even if you're not going far.

"Making sure you're checking your tire treads, your air conditioning, all the fluids in your car are good to go," Fabri said.
