SULLIVAN COUNTY, Pa. — An attorney general convicted a woman from Sullivan County of involuntary manslaughter after failing to request help for a newborn, leading to the baby's death.

Brigette Meckes was a midwife for a newborn that was born at home back in January of 2022.

Shortly after the birth, the baby showed signs of severe distress. Meckes, who was not licensed to practice medical care, used unconventional methods to help the child, who died about two days later.

Meckes was convicted on Wednesday of felony counts of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of a child and misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and concealing the death of a child. She was denied bail.

Meckes will be sentenced at a later date.
