DUSHORE, Pa. — This pavilion outside the Dushore American Legion is a place for members to gather. And now, it will also be a place to remember one of our nation's heroes—Staff Sergeant Raymond Paul McMahon.
On June 4, 1970, McMahon was killed while serving in the Vietnam War.
"54 years ago today in Cambodia, he was shot with a single round to his chest. We want to memorialize him," Commander Scott Karge said.
Raymond Paul McMahon grew up in Dushore and was a staff sergeant in the United States Army.
"He was a kind, gentle person and I know that it was a complete shock to the community when he passed," Bob Getz said.
Members of the Dushore American Legion dedicated their pavilion to McMahon. He was the only resident of Sullivan County killed in action during the Vietnam War.
"It's just a great honor. And he deserves it. He was a very good man," Michael McMahon said.
Michael McMahon is Raymond's brother.
"He would be humble about it, I'm sure. I know our family is very appreciative of it," Michael McMahon said.
Raymond Paul McMahon was 22 years old.
