SELINSGROVE -- After months in the making, Susquehanna University officially has a new mascot: The River Hawks.
Since October, the school narrowed down the options to three possible mascots -- the River Hawks, the Phoenix, and the Bobcats.
The school put it up for a vote and more than 67 percent of students, staff, and alumni chose the River Hawk for their new mascot.
"I'm glad that finally after 158 years Susquehanna has claimed its own nickname. Came from these students here and a group of about 17 other people," said Susquehanna University President Jay Lemons.
Designs for the new mascot are scheduled to be revealed during homecoming weekend in September.
The university's board of trustees voted to replace the former nickname of Crusaders in October.
The school said the term "Crusader" carried negative connotations of violence and religion related to medieval crusaders.
