Snyder County family cooking holiday meals for community

A family from Snyder County is paying it forward by preparing more than 130 meals for people in their community.

SNYDER COUNTY, Pa. — There's an assembly line in Wendy Apple's kitchen in Mount Pleasant Mills. The Apple family, along with friends and other volunteers, are preparing meals for people in their community.

"From McClure to Lewisburg to Mifflinburg to Hartleton, Sunbury now Shamokin," said Pastor David Eia of Grace Covenant Church.

Newswatch 16 introduced you to the Apple family last month as they prepared 50 Thanksgiving meals. After that story was on Newswatch 16, the response was overwhelming.

"Many more people reached out that needed help, but along with that, many people reached out with donations," Wendy Apple said.

Because the need was so great and so many others wanted to help, the Apples decided to prepare more than 130 meals for Christmas.

"We had to up things a little bit. What at one time had been the minister and us doing the deliveries, now we have eight volunteers who are delivering as well," Apple said.

Earlier this year, Ben Delp came to live with the Apple family. Wendy is his caretaker. Ben enjoyed helping with the meals.

"I think it's fun. It gives back to the community because I used to be in that situation, so it's kind of good to have people help out and give food to people who need it," Ben Delp said.

"I love to cook, and I love to help people. As long as it's provided to me and my husband stands behind me, he's the ham maker. Everybody works together, and we make it happen," Apple said.

This is something the Apple family plans to continue each year. In fact, Wendy is considering adding Easter meals into the mix.
