Tornado victims in Schuylkill County urged to report damage

An EF 1 tornado hit parts of Mahanoy Township and Mahanoy City last month.

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — Editor's note: The video above is from Monday, May 27.

Residents in parts of Schuylkill County affected by last month's tornado are urged to report damage claims to the county.

Residents affected by the May 27, 2024, EF 1 tornado in Mahanoy Township and the borough of Mahanoy City should report damages by Thursday, June 6, 2024, to the Mahanoy City Borough Hall or Schuylkill County Office of Emergency Management at 570-622-3739.

As of June 5, 2024, damage reports have been collected from four businesses and 27 residences. Most damages are being covered by private insurance.

Any resident with concerns or questions regarding their homeowner's insurance coverage can contact The Pennsylvania Insurance Department by calling 1-877-881- 6388 or by visiting the Pennsylvania Insurance Department website.

Based on the damage reports received, it has been determined that qualifying for federal disaster funding will be unattainable. Emergency Management staff and local officials have worked carefully to review damages and requirements for programs.

The Schuylkill County COAD is stepping up to fill the need to assist those un-insured homeowners with recovery from this Tornado.

The Schuylkill County COAD will work with a Disaster Care Manager to assist those uninsured residents to coordinate resources needed to address home repair. The COAD will work together to identify possible funding, donation of materials, and coordination of volunteers.
