Three hurt at fire scene in Schuylkill County

Flames broke out Tuesday morning in a home in Palo Alto, near Pottsville.

PALO ALTO, Pa. — Three people, including a firefighter, were hurt after a fire Tuesday morning in Schuylkill County.

The fire started around 9:30 a.m. in a home on West Savory Street in Palo Alto.

Palo Alto Fire Chief Bill Buckingham tells Newswatch 16 that one woman jumped out of the home from the third floor, and a man was rescued from the second-floor porch roof. Both were flown to the hospital with injuries. A third person was believed to be home, but investigators later found them unharmed.

A firefighter was also injured at the scene. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

"It was a big fireball in the rear of the house. On the side of the house, it was all in flames. It started from the shed and quickly went to the house, and the whole side of the house was on fire," Chief Buckingham said.

The chief says more than a dozen tankers were called in to help.

"In the beginning, they had water challenges. They had no water, so they had to call the tanker task force. That is why we had so many tankers and firefighters here and because of where it is at. It is hard to get to," Chief Buckingham added.

The building is gutted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
